5 Easy Ways to Switch to a Low Waste Lifestyle

1 ) Say No to Bags

Instead of always taking a paper or plastic bag from the grocery store, bring your own tote and produce bags. If you live in a city with no car, you can get ones that stuff really nicely into a ball that you can throw into your purse. If you have a car and you forget to bring your bags, have the grocer put your products back into the cart and put them directly into your car! With COVID this year, many places aren’t allowing you to bring personal grocery bags. You can still request to have them placed back in the cart and bag them outside!

If you’re like me, you have way too many tote bags that companies have given for free. But if you really don’t have any… here are a few:

2 ) BYOC (Bring Your Own Cup)

I know COVID has made it more difficult for us to bring our own reusable cups to coffee shops and restaurants - and many places don’t allow them. But this scare tactic was really brought on by the plastic industry. You can read more about it on the Green Peace website here. Our use of plastic has increased 250-300% since COVID started! It’s time to do something about it or else we’re really going to destroy our world. Instead of buying bottles of water while you’re out, bring your own bottle. If you go to a coffee shop, encourage them to do contactless pours. Stojo is starting a campaign to bring back reusables with coffee shops (I hope to share more info on that soon!) Here are few bottles and tumblers that I like:

3 ) Ditch those Cotton Pads

Some of us can use up to 7-10 cotton pads a night just removing makeup, applying toner, taking off nail polish and the list goes on. Ditch those one time use cotton pads and switch to these awesome reusables that you can simply throw into the laundry! This has seriously changed my life. Here are some I recommend:

4 ) Swap out your paper towels with tea towels or rags

I know a lot of us out of convenience, like to use a lot of paper towel. When there’s a spill, when you need to wipe your mouth, when there’s bit of dirt - it’s just easier. Try using tea towels or rags instead! I always have one at the kitchen area designated only for wiping the kitchen and dining table. Then I have one specifically for the bathroom, and one for cleaning the bedroom. Trust me, you’ll feel much better after you switch to towels! You won’t be worried about Costco running out again! Only if you need to buy, here are some ideas:

5 ) Bring your own Utensils

These days, everyone is ordering take out and restaurants automatically give you way too many forks, napkins, and soy sauce packets. Though ordering take out is not ideal since most food are packaged in styrofoam or plastic boxes, but during this pandemic, I feel like it’s almost important to support our local restaurants. And to do a small part, tell the restaurant in the instructions not to include utensils. If you need napkins and sauces, ask for the actual amount that you will use. If you don’t have utensils to repurpose and must purchase, here are some ideas:

Air Fried Shishito Peppers

Eating is always the constant, no matter where you are and how you feel. We’ve been hearing so much about air frying to make crispy and flavorful dishes without the excess oil your body doesn’t need. So in partnership with Crux Kitchen, we are sharing with you one of our favorite air fried snacks - Shishito Peppers! It’s healthy, it’s delicious and it only takes 10 minutes. Trust me… It’s so easy to finish the entire plate in one sitting.

What you need:

  • 8 ounces shishito peppers (mine are from Trader Joe’s)

  • extra virgin olive oil spray (or any oil spray you’d like to use)

  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges

Directions:

  1. Spritz the shishito peppers all over with olive oil.

  2. Preheat the air fryer 400F 3 minutes.

  3. Transfer to the air fryer and cook in one batch 400F 8 minutes, shaking the basket halfway until soft and slightly charred and blistered

  4. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and squeeze with lemon wedges, serve warm.

If you’re interested in an airfryer - here are a few recommended! Researching one can be quite daunting. The prices vary from $50 - $300 USD. Here are a few brands that have good reviews!

Top 5 Sustainable Clothing Brands

I have been on a hunt for affordable and sustainable clothing brands for the past year, and I must say, it was quite difficult to find a good handful of go-to’s that weren't too expensive, that were true to their eco-commitment, and of course stylish. Here are my top 5 faves so far!

AMOUR VERT

For everyday, workday, zoom calls, casual grocery runs…

A new favorite of mine. I found them recently when I was looking for some new sweatpants, and couldn’t resist the cute Tees, tops and dresses too! Amour Vert practices sustainability greatly. Firstly, every tee you buy, they plant a tree. Secondly, all garments are made in small quantities so there’s no excess waste. Lastly and most importantly, they partner directly with mills to develop fabrics that are sustainable, soft and durable, ensuring the most sustainable fibers and raw materials available.

Here are some of my faves:

GIRLFRIEND COLLECTIVE

For your at home workouts, outdoor hikes, casual day out…

I love this workout set, and I have the same in dark blue. I love the high-waisted compression leggings that are so comfortable to wear everyday all day. These leggings have pretty much been my go-to COVID pants for the one day I go out to the grocery store, a 3 mile walk, get takeout, and go home.

Girlfriend is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. Each pair of our Compressive leggings starts with 25 recycled post-consumer water bottles. They partner with ECONYL® to help clean our oceans and recycle that waste into LITE, a stretchy, lightweight fabric you’ll never want to take off.

ALTERNATIVE APPAREL

For your daily routine - roll out of bed, work from home, chores from home, eat at home, sleep at home…

The softest, most comfortable and nice fitting tanks and t-shirts. I have worn my Alternative tops so much that I am hoping to buy the same ones just to replace them.

Alternative uses recycled cotton to save the planet from herbicides and pesticides associated with growing more cotton while keeping textile waste away from landfills. They also use organic cotton, mixed with Tencel material to make their clothes high quality and durable.

By 2021, Alternative pledges to replace all virgin polyester with 100% recycled polyester in future fabrics.

HACKWITH DESIGN HOUSE

For those cute, comfy, flowy days…

Many of the fabrics they use are sourced from a local, family-owned fabric store that specializes in run-off and second-hand fabrics. This is one way we cut down on waste while also supporting our local economy. In their newest venture “The Sustain Shop”, customers can send in their used HDH pieces so that they can find them a new home. Pieces that are still in good-as-new condition will be resold on our site at a lower price point. Pieces that have holes, tears, or stains will be evaluated by the seamstresses, and mended or transformed into a completely new piece.

ABLE

Traveling in style…

One of my favorite leather bags brand, and cutest sandals brand. Able evaluates their manufacturing partners on safety, equality, and wages in order to give better insight into the impact of the supply chain on the women making the products. Able’s jewelry is all made in-house in Nashville, TN, and their leather goods, clothes, and shoes are made by manufacturing partners in Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, and India. Around the world, they work with local community leaders, which result in a more powerful economic transformation rather than trying to command change from the U.S. All their wages are published on the site.
